Antiga Mercantil
From the 1970s, this formerly so grand house was abandoned and slowly fell into a pile of rubble. Between 2007 and 2012, a total renovation have taken place, from a ruin to a modern villa. The restoration have been documented for UNESCO and the work has been guided and directed by the architect Marcus Antman with the help of many talented local artisans.
Our history
The building and courtyard housing the Antiga Mercantil appears first on a map dated 1822, but it is not clear what the exact outline of the building was. It is likely that the building first contained only one row of rooms towards the street, as is depicted in a map from ca 1840.
Ilha de Mozambique
The Island of Mozambique (Portuguese: Ilha de Moçambique) lies off northern Mozambique, between the Mozambique Channel and Mossuril Bay, and is part of Nampula Province. Prior to 1898, it was the capital of colonial Portuguese East Africa. With its rich history and sandy beaches, the Island of Mozambique is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Mozambique's fastest growing tourist destinations.
